In primary 5, he read Simeon Ambakaderemo’s work on Isaac Boro and
immediately became an ardent disciple for the struggle for the emancipation of
the Ijaw and Niger Delta People. At the
University of
Calabar, he attempted setting up the first Pan Ijaw Students Organisation –
The consolidated Ijaw students association (CISA) as a platform for unity and
mobilization of all Ijaw students. After he left Unical, the organization could
not continue.
On his admission to the Rivers State University of Science and
Technology, himself, Barister Alabo Wokoma and Nicolas Ikiriko, mid-wived the
formation of Kalabari Awo kobiri both as a student Association and a pressure
group. It was later changed to Federated Union Of Kalabari Students (FUKS) .

The dream of the founding fathers was to mobilize both Kalabari elites,
students and others to protect and safeguard the interest of the Kalabari
people. It was also at RSUST, that he single handedly introduced the Moslem
Students Society (MSS) into both secondary and tertiary institutions in Rivers
state and became the first Amir of both the RSUST and
Rivers
State area unit. Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari became a full blown Ijaw
activist after the emergence of the Movement for the Survival for the Ogoni
People (MOSOP). He started visiting Ken Saro Wiwa and other ogoni activists. He
was spotted by comrade Churchill Whyte, an associate of Dr. Mofia T. Akobo at a
public forum. Comrade Churchhill Whyte, tried severally without success to link
Alhaji Dokubo-Asari to Dr. M.T Akobo and other comrades but this was not to be
until sometime in 1992 when Churchill succeeded in bringing both of them
together. That eventful and memorable meeting inducted Alhaji Dokubo-Asari into
mainstream socialist activism providing for him a vast connection with
progressive socialists and Marxist organizations all over the world, allowing
him to attend conferences, talkshops, symposia and seminars all over the world.
Alhaji Dokubo-Asari regards Comrade Dr. M.T. Akobo, Churchill Whyte and Chief
Joshua Fumudo as his mentors, role models and leaders in the Ijaw and Niger
Delta Struggle.

Comrade Churchill Whyte introduced Alhaji Dokubo-Asari to the
leadership of the labour union in the then
Rivers State. Before then,
Dokubo-Asari has started attending the Ijaw National Congress (INC) inaugural
meetings at the creek gardens hotels at Bakana street, (Nanka) in Diobu Port
Harcourt and at that time. He was the only Kalabari Man attending the INC
meetings. At a public forum, organized by members of the constitutional
Conference where Alhaji Dokubo-Asari had gone to do a one man protest against
members who he believed were not duly elected by the Ijaw and Rivers people, he
met some Ijaw Activists including T. K Ogoriba who invited him to join the
Movement for the Survival of the Ijaw Ethnic Nationality in The Niger Delta (MOSEIND)
which he immediately joined. That relationship provided him a platform to
mobilize people in the Kalabari area to join the Ijaw and Niger Delta course.
The formation of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), after the Kaima Declaration on
the 10th of December, 1998, provided Alhaji Dokubo-Asari with a
veritable platform for the mobilization of the Ijaw people in the eastern zone
into the mainstream Ijaw struggle.
He traveled to every nook and crannies of the
Ijaw land in the eastern zone distributing the invitation. Immediately after the
formation of the Ijaw Youth Council, he worked with others like Aroloyetein
Brown, Eweleye Fiyasiri to form the Kalabari Revolutionary Organisation (KRIMANI).

They approached Diepriye Alameiseigha the
then Gov. of Bayelsa state who provided with enough money to fight and
frustrate the ambition of Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo. The INC PRESIDENT,
Professor Kimse Okoko, who has never agreed with ALHAJI DOKUBO-ASARI, lined
up the opposition together with IYC president Felix Tuodolo, Oronto Douglas,
Nelson Azibalanaere, Bello Boko, Von Kemedi and others.
Alhaji was supported by the former
president of Ijaw National Congress (INC), Chief Joshua Fumodo, the
secretary Dr. Bobo Jama, Chief Chris Ghomorai, elder PZ Aginiya, Chief
Senator Tari Sekibo, Architect Eteh, F.G Williams, Joseph Eva and others.
Among the Youths, Hon. Kimse Kuku, George Timinimi, Daniel Ekpebide,
Government Ekpekpolo, Aroloyetein Brown, Ann Kio, the leadership of
Mainbutos, the National Union of Izon-Ibe Students (NUIS), led the vanguard
for the support of Alhaji Dokubo-Asari. This polarized the IYC into 2
factions with the Supporters of Dokubo-Asari having the upper hand. The
election went on at the Port Harcourt Integrated Cultural Centre. The
chairman of the ELECO, Paul Clifford, who was also the chairman of the
eastern zone declared Alhaji Dokubo-Asari winner. The convention was
attended by the Chairman and executives of the East and Western zones while
the vice chairman of the Central zone led a section of the central zonal
delegates. There was a stalemate as the executive of Alhaji Dokubo-Asari was
accepted in the west and eastern zones while the central was divided. Most
of the members of the pioneer Executive council led by King Timi Amarah and
John John Oyifie, supported Alhaji Dokubo-Asari while Maxwell Okoh the
chairman of the zone and some members of his exco supported the Felix
Tuduolo led faction. A peace meeting was called and conveyed by Chief Harold
Dapabiriye an Ijaw elder statesman at his residence in Port Harcourt. The
meeting was attended by both sides. The Felix tuodolo’s faction threatened
violence, fire and brimstone. They even published in the media that there
was no need for the police to be involved since it was purely an Ijaw – Ijaw
issue. When Alhaji arrived at the venue with a few people having planned a
strategy to contain them, they jeered at him. Felix made his case first,
where he made allegations that Alhaji was supported and funded by Odili to
take control of IYC and use it for Odili’s support. Alhaji Dokubo-Asari
while presenting his own case, deflated all their submissions, pointing out
that it was the Felix Tuodolo’s group who was guilty of being sponsored by
the Diepriye Alameisiegha led Government of
|
Bayelsa State since one of the
contestants for the position of president from the Felix Tuodolo’s camp ,
Nelson Asibanare was already appointed commissioner for information for the
state and the faction had received huge sums of money from the
Alameiseigha’s government for the purpose of the election. The western and
eastern zone, presented its stand in support of Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari
and a section of the central zone, also showed a strong support for Alhaji
Dokubo-Asari. As the presentations were going on, Felix Tuodolo’s supporters
from Gbundu led by Owei Bronsinde invaded the elders’ canopy saying that the
elders were biased and there was pandemonium. Before then, Alhaji’s
supporters had arrived the venue in their hundreds. In the ensuing violence,
Felix Tuodolo and others were seriously injured. A few weeks later, Felix
Tuodolo left for the United Kingdom for his post graduate studies. Before he
left, he set up a caretaker committee under the leadership of Bello Boko and
Charles Omusuku as secretary with five other members. After Felix left, Jude
Tabai brokered a peace meeting between Charles Omusuku and Alhaji
Dokubo-Asari in order to form an inclusive IYC executive . A new convention
was held on the 31st of December 2001, with Alhaji Mujahid
Dokubo-Asari emerging as President, and Famous Damugha as Deputy President,
Charles Omusuku, Secretary and Kingsley Kuku, Spokes man and others. The
Executive worked harmoniously and made several strides until Alhaji
Dokubo-Asari traveled to Saudi Arabia for his yearly pilgrimage. Famous
Damugha and Charles Omusuku started leading the IYC to extort money from Oil
companies. Alhaji resisted them. Before then, Maxwell Okoh and led the
replacement of the exco of the central zone without reference to the
National Executive council and when he came to Port Harcourt on the 15th
of January 2003, Alhaji confronted him and Famous, Charles Omusuku and
others supported him and the ensuing crises led to the death of Tekena
Eferebo and one Timi while Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari was seriously
injured. After that, series of reconciliatory meetings were held at Senator
Zuofa’s residence which resulted in reuniting the exco, Unlike the INC which
had remained disunited for three years at that time. Alhaji Dokubo-Asari
radicalized the IYC with the motto” Self Determination and Resource Control
by Any Means Necessary” |
