Alhaji Mujahid Abubakr Dokubo-Asari was born Melford Uzodinma Dokubo Goodhead Jnr, to Honorable Justice Melford Uzodinma Dokubo Goodhead Snr. , and Mrs. Bekinwari Dokubo Goodhead Nee Dick Tom Big Harry on the 1st of June 1964 about a few minutes past 12 midnight on a stormy and rainy night at the Buguma Maternity. His birth was heralded by dreams, signs and visions by several people and his grand mother Princess Okukuba Wilkinson Dokubo Goodhead, Nee Tom Princewill was instructed by the Teke people (Local prayer house or native kalabari Christian worship center) to give him a befitting name.  grand aunty Kala-Obuta went against his father’s decision and named him Issinwananakuye which when translated means son of Issinwananaku. Nwananaku in his life time was a trusted Kalabari Field Marshal and Commander of King Amachree Troops.Alhaji Dokubo-Asari descended from the two principal families of the great Kalabari Kingdom (New Calabar). His father Hon. Justice Melford Goodhead was the third son of Mr. Wilkinson Dokubo Goodhead of the Issinwananaku (Young Arney) and Young George Goodhead (Akabo or Barango-Tariah). Wilkinson Dokubo Goodhead’s father Amieyeofori Young Arney did not marry his mother Oriyidiya in accordance with Kalabari tradition since she was an Ibo woman brought into Kalabari land by Chief Akabo Young George Goodhead (Barango).

When Wilkinson Dokubo Goodhead was born, he was taken into custody by his mother’s people and he lived under the tutelage of Chief Amakiri Young George Goodhead. He was sent to school as this was the tradition of the George Goodhead household. When he passed his entrance to go to CMS Lagos, his foster father Chief Amakiri Young George Goodhead was not very comfortable in sending his young son to a very far distance, so Wilkinson Dokubo Goodhead was made to join the teaching profession at a very tender age starting his teaching career at the St. Micheal Mission School Buguma his “alma mater”. He later taught in several schools all over the former eastern region of the Nigerian State. He later switched over to the colonial postal service and became the first postmaster of the Buguma Post Office and was nicknamed the People’s Post Master. Wilkinson Dokubo Goodhead was an industrious man who vied into many industrial ventures and opened the first soft drink (Cola Drink) factory in the whole of the then owerri province and later Rivers Province. Hon. Justice Melford Goodhead was more attached to his Mother’s family, the Prince Ogo Tom Princewill’s family. His mother, Princess Okukuba Wilkinson Dokubo Goodhead is a strong willed woman and a personality that conjures reverence and respect in people. She was a voice of the voiceless and the down trodden. She was a pillar of the King Amachree Royal Family and can be best referred to as the queen mother of the Kalabari people during the reign of her two brothers King Jacob Tom Princewill and King Fredrick Tom Princewill. Since her demise, the King Amachree Royal Family has not produced anyone to take her place.

 

EARLY LIFE

Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari started his primary education at the Baptist day School Buguma and later attended series of primary schools because of what is commonly referred to as his stubbornness. Starting with King Amachree Memorial School Buguma, St. Micheal Primary School Buguma, Bernard Carr MunicipalPrimary School, and St. Mary’s Catholic Mission School and the township School, Port Harcourt. 

He started his secondary education at the St. Scholastica High School, Bakana and later moved to the Baptist High School Port Harcourt, where he finished his secondary school education, leaving school with three Alphas and three credits with a pass in English and Mathematics. He proceeded to Akpor Grammer School Ozuoba to resit his school certificate examination and he came out with four alphas and three credits having secured his credit in English, he proceeded to the University of Calabar to pursue a Law course having passed his JAMB examinations in 1985. He left the University of Calabar after three years because of his inability to meet the academic requirements of the University. While at the University of Calabar, he got involved in Students Unionism and became the President of the National Union Of Rivers State Students (NURSS) Calabar Chapter. He was also president of the MALABO express and was a member of Politburo   of the Movement of progressive Nigeria (MPN) a Leninist/ Marxist Movement. He was member and later Leader of the black Consciousness Movement (BCM).  He was also a member of the anti-apartheid Movement -People united against Apartheid South Africa. He was never a member of any of the Known Cults or confraternities or any of these bourgeois organizations like the Dollar Club, the palm wine drinkers club, Alpha Beta and others.

After he left the University of Calabar, he was admitted to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology Port Harcourt to continue his law studies, he again left in similar circumstances.
